Time Warner Cable App For Mac

In an attempt to stay relevant with the kids, Time Warner is bringing its to PCs and Macs. The service was originally only available for the iPad and iPhone. The software is currently in beta form and works on all major browsers.

Charter Communications, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks are now one company, and soon you’ll get to know us by the name Spectrum. This app is for customers in the former Time Warner Cable service area.

I unfortunately, or fortunately depending on who you ask, do not have Time Warner Cable so I can’t personally verify the quality of the app. The original report on, however, seems to indicate that the web app works well and has good video quality. Unfortunately, like with any streaming service, users can only watch live television at their home where the cable connection is hooked up. There are about 200 channels to choose from but the all too important Viacom channels, Comedy Central and MTV, are absent. The app essentially works like a cable set top box does. It allows for HD programming, recording, setting favorites, etc. It also features search, parental controls and search functions. It’s a good move on Time Warner’s part, but will people really choose this over other options like? It’s good to see cable companies embrace the Internet, but they still make it too hard and obnoxious for users to access the content they want to watch.

Disputes with Fox, Viacom and Discovery caused Time Warner to of the from its live TV streaming yesterday, but as promised it has brought in some new ones to replace them. Among the 17 channels added are several networks from the / group including ABC Family, Disney, Disney XD and ESPNnews, plus selections like MSNBC, Syfy and USA as well as the curious addition of Fox News. We're still not convinced watching TV on our tablet is a more useful development than using it as a / but until those features arrive or the app gets sued out of existence, that's what this one does. Update: There's no word from Time Warner, but Multichannel News reports five more new channels have been added this afternoon - Bloomberg TV, PBS Kids Sprout, Hallmark Movie Channel, Current TV and TruTV. Turner also stated TBS will join them once the app supports MLB blackout restrictions, which is also the reason why other ESPN stations aren't included yet.
